On the weekend of 7-9th November 2004, Deaf UK Athletics held its first ever deaf training weekend in Scotland. Glasgow City Council kindly offered us the use of their magnificent National Indoor Sports Arena, Kelvin Hall and the outdoor Scotstoun International Athletics stadium.

The full GB squad going to Melbourne attended. This was a good opportunity for the DUKA Deaflympics team to train peacefully without domestic distractions and discuss any issues relating to Melbourne Deaflympics. It allowed the athletes to get to know each other and helped to develop team spirit. It also enabled DUKA to network with Scottish sports facilities management and educate them of the needs of deaf athletes.
In Glasgow, the athletes worked very hard. The officials had the chance to witness their fitness level and give advice on how to further develop their strengths and overcome their weaknesses. It was not all running and throwing. After the hard sessions in the track and gym, the athletes had the use of the swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam bath to relieve their overworked muscles.
In the evening, the full team went for a meal together in a nearby restaurant. The weekend disappeared very quickly but it was a success. We hope to organise further training weekends around the UK after the Deafylmpics.
If you have ideas of a location where DUKA should consider for future training weekends or you are interested in attending a training weekend, please contact us.
