For us regular people is sometimes hard to imagine the pressures of an athlete on the playing field, but it’s next to impossible to relate to the challenges of being deaf and being an athlete as well.
However, deaf athletes participate in all types of sports all around the world, with limited or no modifications at all. The obstacles they have to overcome, though, to be able to compete at an elite level are not negligible, the most important of all being the communication barriers.In the United Kingdom, it has been lately observed a steady march towards equal access to sports for all people, and deaf sports are growing in popularity, with highly promoted campaigns to increase deaf people’s participation in different mainstream sports, such as athletics, football, golf and others.
