Candy running in the 8000m XC raceGutsy Candy tries her best as she again finishes 7th

The second day of the 9th European Cross Country championships saw Candy Hawkins competing in the Ladies longer distance – the dreaded 8km (8,000m) race over a muddy wet cross country woodlands.

“I still don’t feel that I have overcome the jet lag. I feel weird today; legs heavy and rather tired.” Said Hawkins.  Candy was in good spirit; positive and determined to give it all her best.

With the race including most of the same people she had raced against the previous night, Candy would have had to be totally fresh and in shape to run the race of her life.

Candy running in Romania XC 2010Another Brave run by Candy in Romania

A very determined Candy Hawkins did all she could to get to Baile, Felix, Romania for the 9th European Cross Country Championships. “At my age, I cannot afford to let travel arrangements jeopardise my intention to participate in these championships.  I have worked so hard and everyone was targeted towards participating in Romania Cross Country.  I was very disappointed when I was told that it was cancelled.  I already booked my flight.  The next day, I got news that the championships were back on again.  Confused and dejected, I re-motivated myself to myself.

Candy running in the European XC ChampionshipsHopes of British Athletes Dashed By Volcanic Ashes

The hopes of 3 Great Britain’s hopefuls for the 9th European Deaf Athletics Championships being held in Baile, Felix, Romania 23-24th April 2010 has been dashed by the Icelandic volcanic ash tragedy. With the team’s departure date at the time of the eruption, travel plans went astray as EDSO informed the team a day before departure that the Championships was cancelled and moved to 10-12 September 2010.  With the team worried how to make the journey to Romania when all the UK airports were closed, it was a welcome decision that the event would be rescheduled.  Some of the team members cancelled their flights whilst others waited to see what the outcome would be.
