DUKA Team in Sheffield

Sheffield Training Weekend

News...

Deaf UK Athletes elite squad joined the top crops of England elite hearing athletes for a joint training session in the beautiful English Institute of Sport (EIS) Sheffield arena.
The event took place on from 10am to 4pm on 21st Feb.

So DUKA athletes travelled down on Friday evening and the rest arrived in time for the day’s training on Saturday.   This is a joint initiative between England Athletics and DUKA.  It is aimed at helping to develop deaf athletes talents and prepare the team for Taiwan Deaflympics.

This ‘Regional Squad Days form part of the “Switched onto Athletics” programme sponsored by CE Electric.  The squad days aim to provide a positive training environment for the regions athletes whilst providing support and educational opportunities to the regions coaches and elite deaf athletes with support from Sign Language interpreters.

Although most of the track and field events were covered, the hammer event is based elsewhere, but it was decided to build hammer into this training sessions to avoid isolation of the hammer throwers.   Also, the endurance group course train at different locations, but we have agreed to incorporate them into the Sheffield timetable.

The third endurance training session was held on 15th February at Holmfirth and the final session is at the E.I.S. on the 29th March 2009, this is a day after the other track and field event training session in the same EIS venue on 28th March.  All GB Deaf athletes for Taiwan are strongly encouraged to attend this last session.  This will be the last opportunity for the team to meet and discuss plans and issues before the 19th April competition, which ALL Taiwan GB Team athletes have to attend.

Remember 19th April competition is free for spectators to watch.  Come watch our deaf athletes compete against some of the top hearing athletes in Stoke On Trent.  Don’t miss it.
